The big news this week was around Auckland’s rapidly growing population (click here for article) and the lack of new building consents being processed (click here to read more). This poses the question: where is everyone going to live?! Auckland just tipping over the 1.5 million mark this week (we hit 500,000 in 1961 and 1,000,000 in 1996).
The projections are, that Auckland’s population will hit 2,000,000 by 2030; and with a huge lag in new housing builds, if you’re a buyer in the market today, securing something sooner rather than later would be the right idea. It’s our belief that supply will continue to be very tight in relation to demand and local house prices will continue to creep up.
Also, this week we include a promo piece for a cool new child care centre in Grey Lynn. Little Engines will help meet the ever increasing demand for quality child care in our area.

Talking to our team at the sales meeting this week was an interesting experience. Normally at this time of year (pre Waitangi Day), market activity in terms of unconditional sales and numbers through open homes is quite light.
Our team are reporting numbers of 50 to 60 groups though most open homes at the weekend and have achieved 4 sales in the last 7 days. Buyers have returned from their Christmas break with a real spring in their step and plenty of urgency in their actions. There are some very serious decision makers out there at the moment, slightly earlier in the year than expected. As a result of this, vendors are benefitting from having their property exposed to the market with very few properties competing against theirs for buyer attention.
We are also starting to see buyers who are relocating from Christchurch, with insurance cheques in hand, making serious enquiries on local property.
All in all, it has been a very fast start to the year in a Real Estate sense.
